We hope that the below FAQ for applicants will answer any questions you may have about our application process or aptitude test. If you have any further questions, please use the online chat at the bottom of the screen which is managed during our opening hours.
I have submitted an application form to Tullos Training Ltd, what happens next?
Once you have submitted your application to Tullos Training Ltd, you will be invited to come and sit our aptitude test. On receipt of your application we will send you a test date which can be changed if you are unavailable on the date we send you. If you did not complete the interactive PDF version of the application form, you will also be sent a copy of the application form which we require to be completed and returned to us prior to you sitting the aptitude test.
I am interested in becoming an Electrician, how do I apply?
Although the Pre-Employment Assessment and Apprenticeship Training is carried out at Tullos Training, the application process is all handled by the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT). For more information on Electrical Apprenticeships and to submit an application form, please visit SECTT’s website using the following link – http://www.sectt.org.uk/index.html.
What is an aptitude test?
There are various different types of aptitude tests available such as numerical reasoning, mechanical comprehension, situational judgement etc. Employers use aptitude tests to help them narrow down their applicants and see if a candidate is suitable for the position they have within their company.
At Tullos Training we use 3 different aptitude tests. For Engineering interests, we use the AH4 and Bennett Mechcanical Comprehension tests. For an interest in Plumbing, Air Conditioning or Refrigeration, candidates will sit the BPEC Aptitude Test for Plumbing and Heating Apprentices. For interests in the Business Administration, Logistics or Management programmes, candidates will sit the AH4 Aptitude Test.
All of the mentioned tests include a series of General Knowledge, Mathematics and English based questions. Any candidates who pass the aptitude test required for their interests will be given a short interview and colour blindness check. These tests are sutiable for anyone of any age. It is desirable that a candidate would have a Mathematics qualification at a minimum of National 4 level or equivalent. This is because any Mathematics completed during the course of your training will be at SCQF Level 5.
Skills Development Scotland have a very informative section on their website which can be accessed using the following link – https://www.myworldofwork.co.uk/getting-job/aptitude-tests. This will provide you with further information on the different types of aptitude tests you may come across on your search for an apprenticeship and tips to help you pass.
BPEC Aptitude Test – https://bpec.org.uk/learners/aptitude-test/
AH4 Aptitude Test – https://www.nshd.mrc.ac.uk/nshd/cognitive-tests/about-tests/
Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Aptitude Test – https://www.assessmentday.co.uk/mechanical-reasoning.htm and https://www.jobtestprep.co.uk/free-bennett-test-and-study-guide
How long does the aptitude test take to complete?
This varies depending on the tests you are required to do and how many people are attending the aptitude test at the same time as you. The tests generally last anything from 45 minutes to 2 hours including your interview and colour blindness check.
Is there parking available at Tullos Training Ltd?
Yes, we have a car park at the front of our premises which can be used by all staff and visitors.
I passed the relevant Tullos Training Ltd aptitude tests, what happens now?
After passing all aptitude tests which are relevant to your interests, we will send you a Aptitude Test Pass Letter. This will explain that we will keep you application on file and forward your details onto any employer who may be requiring apprentices in your area. Generally, potential employers will contact you directly should they wish to offer you an interview. We strongly suggest that you are continuously checking your e-mails as employers are most likely to contact you by e-mail. However, it is also important that you are answering your phone, even if you don’t recognise the number, as some employer may still choose to contact you this way.
Your letter will also mention and it is important to note that this is not an offer or guarantee on an apprenticeship and we would recommend that you continue to actively seek to approach potential employers yourself as not all employers will offer their vacancies through ourselves. However, you may make any potential employer aware that you have passed the tests mentioned on your letter and that you may be eligible for funding to pay for your training.
You could also refer to the Skills Development Scotland websites linked for more tips on finding employment and apprenticeships. Both websites have job search funcitons, however, Apprenticeships.Scot, https://www.apprenticeships.scot/, is more tailored to finding an apprenticeship. My World of Work, https://www.myworldofwork.co.uk/, is also useful as it provides many tips on finding employment such as how to write CVs and cover letters, and interview techniques.
Another tip for any of our applicants would be to follow us on social media as we are posting job adverts for companies. Please remember that even though we are posting or sharing a job advert on social media, the employer may not have asked us to send them application forms so if you see a position you are interested in, please take the time to apply for it. Even if we have already forwarded your application form onto the employer it will show them that you are interested in the position.
I failed the Tullos Training Ltd aptitude test, what happens now?
If you fail the any of the relevant aptitude tests on your intial sitting, you will be invited back to Tullos Training Ltd to re-sit the test(s) you failed. Scores from any tests passed will be saved and you will not be required to sit these again. We offer a further 2 re-sits after the initial sitting of the tests, if required.
How long does it take to find an apprenticeship?
We really cannot put a number on the amount of days, weeks or months it will take to find an apprenticeship. Some of our candidates have been employed by companies within a few weeks of having passed the test, others can take a few months. You shouldn’t worry if you haven’t heard from us or any companies in awhile as there is not a definitive amount of time it takes to find an apprenticeship.
How do I withdraw my application form?
To withdraw your application form, please send an e-mail to email@example.com clearly stating that you wish to withdraw your application form. You can include a reason if you wish, however, this is not neccessary.
